Sorry for the radio silence. We have found ourselves incredibly busy these past few weeks as our move to Greenville is fast approaching. It feels like we're rapidly running out of time to spend with the people we love here, get our home ready for the move, and to do all of the things in Baton Rouge that we wanted to do before we left.
Yesterday, in fact, we had some friends over and played Axis and Allies, Diplomacy, Settlers of Catan, and Dominion all in one day because it had been a goal of ours to do at some point while we were all together here in Baton rouge. So played them all IN ONE DAY. It was a long day, but it was awesome.
Anyways, I wanted to share with you some pictures of a couple of projects that we had wanted to get done before we moved onto our next home. We are incredibly pleased with how both projects turned out, so take a look!
Project 1- Code name: Command Strip Hook Upgrade
So for a long time we were rocking the college-style command strip hook for a hand towel holder in our bathroom. I found these on pinterest and thought they would look really great in our new apartment in Greenville. Our current apartment only has room for one of them in the bathroom but we went ahead and made two so we'd have it for our new place.
Here is all of our supplies that we used!
Then we just applied a single coat of stain to give it a sort of unfinished rustic look. We have fully subscribed to the sock method of staining at this point in our DIY careers.
After that we just screwed in a couple of brushed nickel hooks and hot glued on a few flowers that I found and voila! We just graduated from our command strip hook. I should probably mention that, ashamedly, we mounted the boards on the wall using command strips, so did we really graduate?
Isn't it pretty? I love both of them and I can't wait to hang the second one up when we move!
The towel holder was sort of a mini project because were able to do most of it in a single afternoon. Our big mega project that we've had going on took us a couple of weeks to fully accomplish.
Project 2- Code Name: Welcoming our Bedroom Furniture to the 21st Century
As some of you know, when Joshua and I got married were SUPER blessed with a ton a free furniture from our families, in particular from my mom and dad, to get us started in our marriage. And we are incredibly grateful for their generosity. That being said, some of our furniture was a bit, how shall we say it...dated. And the 90s were a wonderful time in history for sure, but it was time to bring our furniture a little more up to date.
So we really wanted to target our dressers:
And we decided to throw in my bookcase so that it would match:
So we decided to stain them a bit darker and to update the hardware on the dressers. Now, you may or may not remember the table that Joshua re-finished back in September, but stripping the stain from the table and chairs was an absolute nightmare, so we decided to use gel stain this time. Gel stain allows you stain over the old stain and saved us a ton of time and headache to get the look we wanted.
Here's what we used:
I won't bore you with the process but we sanded a bit and stained a bit and then waited a LONG LONG time and then sealed it with a Poly top coat. Here's what we're left with when it's all said and done:

We don't have any super fancy tools to make nailing boards together easier like the lady in the blog does, so we just nailed them at an angle and reinforced the hold with wood glue. I was surprised at how sturdy they were after the glue had dried.

We are incredibly excited with how they turned out and will probably hang onto the set for many years to come. Sorry Ashton and Chase!
Our next move is to tackle the bed frame after we move to Greenville. Wish us luck!
